What Does It Mean to Command the Room?

Commanding the room isn’t about being the loudest person in it. It’s about communicating with confidence, credibility, and presence—whether you’re introducing yourself, contributing in a meeting, leading a conversation, or giving a presentation.

Before you say a word, your posture, eye contact, facial expression, gestures, and presence are already communicating. The way you use your body and voice can shape how others experience your confidence, credibility, and approachability.

Why This Training Matters

Your message starts before your first word.

Research shows that people form impressions remarkably quickly. In as little as 1/10 of a second, people can begin judging trustworthiness and competence—before you’ve had a chance to explain your experience, expertise, or ideas.

And those first impressions can be shaped by what people see and hear from you. Research has found that even brief, silent video clips of professors could predict end-of-semester evaluations, highlighting just how much people can communicate without words.

Command the Room helps professionals become more intentional about the signals they send. Participants learn how posture, eye contact, gestures, facial expression, vocal delivery, and purposeful pauses can strengthen the way their message is received.

The goal isn’t to change who you are. It’s to help you communicate with greater confidence while staying true to your personality.

  • 1/10 second — How quickly someone can begin judging trustworthiness and competence before you say a word.
  • 30 seconds — Silent video clips of professors predicted end-of-semester ratings, demonstrating the influence of nonverbal communication.
  • 2 traits — Warmth and competence are major drivers of first impressions, with both communicated through nonverbal cues.
  • Gestures matter — Audiences remember more from speakers who use natural hand gestures.
  • First minutes matter — Eye contact, posture, and expressiveness can influence hiring decisions independently of qualifications.
