Two Proven Problem-Solving Approaches and Expert Tips to Tackle Challenges Effectively

As a career coach, I run into many people that need help to solve the problems they encounter.

Problem-solving is an essential skill for success in all areas of life. It is the ability to identify and solve problems in a systematic and effective way. There are many different problem-solving processes, but one that I found most helpful for me over the years, I learned by taking a Dale Carnegie course over 35 years ago and I know that it works.

Step 1: Identify the problem as clearly as possible.

What is the problem? What are the specific symptoms? When did the problem start? What have you tried so far to solve the problem? It is important to be as specific as possible when defining the problem. The more specific you are, the easier it will be to find a solution.

Step 2: Understand everyone’s interests and list each.

What are the needs and concerns of the people involved in the problem? What are their desired outcomes? It is important to understand everyone’s interests before developing solutions. This will help to ensure that the solutions are fair and that they meet the needs of everyone involved.

Step 3: List the possible solutions (options).

Brainstorm a list of all possible solutions to the problem. Don’t censor yourself at this stage. The more solutions you have to choose from, the better.

Step 4: Evaluate the options.

Consider the pros and cons of each solution. Evaluate the solutions based on their effectiveness, cost, feasibility, and impact on everyone involved.

Step 5: Select an option or options.

Choose the solution that you believe is the best fit for the problem. If you cannot agree on a single solution, you may need to select a combination of solutions.

Step 6: Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation.

What will you do if the solution doesn’t work? How will you monitor the implementation of the solution? How will you evaluate the effectiveness of the solution? It is important to have a plan in place in case the solution does not work as expected.

Step 7: How to address and solve problems

Once you have selected a solution, it is important to implement it effectively. This may involve developing a plan, assigning tasks, and setting deadlines. It is also important to monitor the implementation of the solution and adjust as needed.

Second Option for Problem-Solving

This is a simplified version of the seven-step process. It is a good option for simple problems or when you are short of time. This one is the one I use the most often.  Not saying I only have simple problems, just that I find it is quicker for me.

1: Clearly identify the problem.

What is the problem? What are the specific symptoms? When did the problem start? What have you tried so far to solve the problem?

2: What are some possible solutions to resolve this?

Brainstorm a list of all possible solutions to the problem. Don’t censor yourself at this stage. The more

3: What is the best solution?

4: What are we doing to do about it?

Develop a plan to implement the solution and assign tasks. Set deadlines and monitor the implementation of the solution.
