MAKE YOUR ORGANIZATION THRIVE FROM THE INSIDE!
by Travis Jones, CEO and President at Career Development Partners
As we move rapidly into the new year, my executive coach, Mike Todd with Learning Unlimited has challenged me to reread the book, The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni. The book focuses on what makes up a healthy organization.
Below are a few thoughts from our session. I trust that you will find some inspiration to thrive in the coming year to a new level of excellence.
A company’s deadliest enemies are internal. How we treat each other while we face external challenges determines our competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Internal, healthy environments are more important than external issues.
Your employees thrive when they feel they belong and contribute on issues that matter.
All employees, no matter their personality profile bring value. We’re better together, but only if we honor, develop, and harness our uniqueness and differences.
An area that deeply challenged me, as I read the book again for the about the 5th time, was the lack of shared accountability. However, based on the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, I understand that as a leader I need to take extreme ownership of what happens in my organization.
Problem solving, conflict resolution, new initiatives, and project meetings are a delusional waste of time apart from shared accountability.
If we fail, it’s not one person’s fault. It begins with each of us taking responsibility for not only our area but for having a bigger sense of the overall contribution to the whole of the organization if thriving is going to become a reality.
How do we declare and define accountability? If we spend some time working on declaring and defining accountability, our team will step up to the plate or leave. Either option will help us to thrive.
What happens when someone drops the ball and the expectations are defined and declare? Is it their fault or our fault? Could it be both as a leader? I think so!
Where is the “we” when things don’t get done? If success is the result of how we work together, so is failure. Look at yourself as the leader and go back to defining and declaring responsibility and reinvest in the success of your people.
Failing organizations are like a chicken coop. When one chicken has a flaw, the others peck at it. A thriving company looks at failure as an opportunity to help your people thrive.
As a certified Everything DiSC Workplace facilitator, I believe one of the best ways to help companies thrive is using tools like DISC to expedite the process.
